I had the best of intentions lat night. I was going to get to bed early and face Monday morning with a refreshing full night of sleep. It hasn’t happened all year, but as I said, I had good intentions. Then, as I was getting ready to put this plan into action, I hit a bit of a snag.

Somehow I found myself at 1:00 in the morning killing ants in the bathroom. Why they pick on my bathroom I don’t know, because there are crumbs all over the kitchen counters that they totally ignore. There were only a few ants last night, and they were coming up through the bathroom drain so they were fairly well controlled. A spritz of Raid and a swipe with a wipe and zap! Gone.

Only, not so much. They were gone for five minutes, and then they were back. They were gasping and limping, but they were back coming through the drain. You’d think that a blast of hot water and a small dose of poison would send them in the other direction, but apparently you’d be wrong.

On the other hand, this morning they were indeed gone. I found one dead ant today, and that was it. I’m still a little offended that they preferred my bathroom to my kitchen, but I suppose I shouldn’t complain. And I’m definitely not going to go out of my way to invite them into the kitchen, where I’d be a little more hesitant to do what needs to be done to get rid of them.

Full moon in a red sky.

Nobody told me to stay home and wait for the phone repair guy today. The phone company’s web site said that my problem would be fixed, but that’s all the information I had until I got a static-laden call from the man on the pole at about 11:00 am. Half an hour later he showed up at my door and told me he’d flipped a switch and solved the problem. I picked up the phone and didn’t hear any noise, so I assume he was telling the truth, but he gave me his personal pager number, just in case. So far, so good, although I couldn’t check it all day because I didn’t get any phone calls (the one time I actually wanted to hear the phone ring).

Tonight I got another call from the phone company, but this time it was a recording, letting me know that my repair work was complete. “Thank you for using The Phone Company,” the voice said. Like I have a choice, right?

Stuff

Good. It matters not at all to me whether the American League Most Valuable Player is Alex Rodriguez or David Ortiz. But I’m glad A-Rod won, because he’s a complete ballplayer, not just a designated hitter. I don’t think a player who does nothing but hit is as valuable to his team as a guy who plays a mean third base as well. (Okay, so Ortiz played ten games at first base. Rodriguez played 161 games at third.)

"Try not to worry about me. I’ll be just fine, as long as I can get eight hours of sleep tonight and a stress-free Monday. That’s not to much to ask, is it? For the sake of my health?"
